WHY AVOIDING GLUTEN CAN BE BENEFICIAL FOR YOUR HEALTH

You’ve probably heard a lot about gluten over the past few years, and gluten-free diets are now a popular talking point in the world of nutrition. However, it’s far more than just a buzzword and could be the key to unlocking a healthier lifestyle if you have an intolerance or are allergic.

  • What is gluten & gluten intolerance?

Gluten is a protein that is commonly found in wheat, rye, barley, oats, and other grains. While many people confuse wheat with gluten, it is possible for your body to disagree with wheat and yet still be OK with gluten.

People that do suffer from gluten allergies generally fall into one of two categories. The first is that they have coeliac disease; a serious auto-immune disease in which the presence of gluten can actively harm the small intestines. The other is a gluten intolerance, which is a more mild allergic reaction but can still be quite uncomfortable.

Gluten intolerance is characterised by sensitivity to gluten. Some people will find that even the smallest levels can lead to discomfort including stomach pains, bloating, and digestive issues. Others will find that they can take a little gluten without noticeable problems, but still have to be careful that they don’t eat too much.

  • Going gluten-free

Many of the symptoms of gluten intolerance can be easily confused with other food-related and digestive problems, so getting diagnosed can be difficult. If you think you have an intolerance to gluten, you can start by cutting it out of your diet and seeing how you feel (always remember to consult your doctor before making any major changes).

Gluten can be found in these items (some might surprise you!)

  • Bread
  • Pasta
  • Cereal
  • Sauce
  • Sausages
